$17 billion embezzled from Iraq reconstruction funds

 


After the invasion of Iraq by US troops in 2003, the "Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance" was created, a position initially held by Lieutenant General Jay Garner, who was soon replaced by Paul Bremer.

After eight years, the US and Iraqi governments have come to the same conclusion: Paul Bremer led a gang that embezzled approximately $17 billion from the Iraqi people. The Iraqis are now asking for the UN's support to recover these funds and perhaps apply them to the many needs of the oil-rich country, which is mired in unemployment...
