A computer espionage network has managed to infiltrate computers belonging to governments, embassies, human rights organizations and media outlets in 103 countries, including Portugal.

According to a report by the University of Toronto, the largest of the 1,295 computers targeted by this espionage action belong to countries or diplomatic missions in Southeast Asia, but this network also infiltrated the computer network of the Portuguese government.

Computers belonging to the US news agency Associated Press in London and Hong Kong, computers belonging to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese embassy in the US, and a Venezuelan telephone operator were also affected.

This report did not attribute the origin of this espionage to a definitive source, having only confirmed that three control servers installed in Chinese provinces and another in California were involved.

The New York Times said that one of the possible traces of China's official involvement in this espionage network is the phone call received by an as yet unidentified diplomat.

This investigation, carried out by the University of Toronto, followed a request from the Dalai Lama's office for experts to analyse the computer network from which documents had been virtually removed and from which microphones and cameras were remotely controlled.
